Cloud computing 'not yet safe'

April 07, 2010

Most firms opting for "cloud computing" have inadequate security measures to safely run the system, a leading antivirus company has claimed.

Citing research by the Ponemon Institute, Justin Somaini, Symantec's chief information security officer, said that while many businesses had been convinced by the promise of large cash savings, the vast majority were "flying blind" when it came to IT security.

"There's no formal vetting process," he said. "This is being done in a very ad-hoc and immature manner to some degree.

"We know the cloud is becoming a more valuable technology, so this survey is a call to arms."

His comments were echoed by internet expert Simon Heron, who said many systemic problems would have to be addressed in the near future.
