Facebook to update online safety

April 14, 2010

Facebook has announced new measures to enhance social networking safety, including the overhaul of its abuse reporting system, after receiving calls to improve online security.

The social networking site said that the redesigned reporting system will allow Facebook users to bring any inappropriate contact or suspicious behaviour into the notice of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop).

The move comes after the Government and parents raised concern over the safety of its 23 million British users.

It has been reported that Facebook is also planning to set up a new 24-hour police hotline, which will help users with emergencies, investigations and prosecutions.

However, Facebook has not agreed to install a "panic" button on the popular networking site.

Jim Gamble, chief of Ceop and bosses of Facebook held a four-hour meeting in Washington DC.

Mr Gamble, Britain's most senior official responsible for protecting youngsters online, said that the networking site did not agree to his demands in the meeting, but acknowledged it was "one small step from doing the right thing".
