Hunt for cyber-security experts

April 30, 2010

The Cyber Security Challenge UK begins this week as efforts increase to boost the UK's level of cyber-defence.

The competition, put together by a combination of businesses, police and government organisations, aims to find those with a talent for thwarting the "bad guys" on the internet.

A series of challenges will unearth those who have the relevant skills to carve out a career in computer security.

The candidates will be tested on topics such as spotting security vulnerabilities in website code, network defence and digital forensics.

Contestants who pass this first batch of tests will then face head-to-head challenges, as well as receiving further training to improve their skills, with scholarships on the horizon for some.

The Lords recently published a report which highlighted that future wars may take place increasingly as cyber-attacks.

Although the UK's defences were seen as robust, the report criticised many European nations for their lax levels of cyber-security.
